BUREN EUGENE COOK, SR.
The Cook family moved from Colquitt, Ga., to Haines City in 1931. By 1932, the brothers started a small business with only one truck. By the mid '50s, B.C. Cook & Sons became the largest intermediate harvesters in Florida. B.E. "Bud" was the last surviving member of the four sons of the late B.C. "Booley" and Ethel Donley Cook.
Buren Eugene Cook Sr. was born in Miller County, Ga., on March 10, 1917. He passed away on Saturday, June 3, 2006, of heart failure at Winter Haven Hospital. He was well respected by citrus leaders throughout the state. He served as president and secretary of B.C. Cook & Sons Enterprises Inc. Bud was a charter member of Florida Citrus Mutual. He served as a committee member of the Florida Citrus Commission for 14 years. He also served on the committee of Citrus Advisory for Florida Farm Bureau Foundation.
B.E. "Bud" received the following achivements through his busy lifetime: Future Farmer of America Lifetime Honoary Member, the National Farm City Council Award for State of Florida (1976) and Florida Farm Bureau Federation Outstanding Service and Leadership. He was selected as Pioneer of the Year for Haines City.
He was Polk County and state president of Polk County Farm Bureau, president of Kiwanis Club of Haines CIty and past director of Haines City Chamber of Commerce. His hobby was truly helping Florida grow with America's Agriculture.
Bud and his wife were both lifelong members of First Baptist Church/NorthRidge of Haines City. He served as a deacon for many years and was past president of Baptist Men of Ridge Association. When he was not serving his church, community or agriculture thorughout the state, he enjoyed fishing and watching the University of Florida Gators play football.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Vera Grogan Cook of Haines City. They have one son, Buren E. Cook Jr., also of Haines City. Cook has many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Oak Ridge Funeral Care, Haines CIty. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at NorthRidge Church. Internment to follow at the family mausoleum in Forest Hill Cemetery, Haines City. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to NorthRidge Church, 2250 S.R. 17 South, Haines City, FL 33844.
