Obituary
PITMAN, Shirley Eloise (nee Porter) - 95, passed away Tuesday, November 9, 2010, in Villa St. Joseph-du-Lac, in Yarmouth. She was born November 19, 1914 in Rockville, Yarmouth Co., and was a daughter of the late Wentworth Eugene and Florence Elizabeth (Carr) Porter. A long time resident of Argyle Head, she was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She owned and operated a logging mill with her late husband, Leslie Pitman, for many years. Aunt Shirley was much loved by her many nieces and nephews who remember her taking them for rides on her motorcycle, loading them on to the hay cart, picking berries, swinging in her barn, and giving them money to go to Hannah's store! She was a strong lady; milked her own cows, churned her own butter and baked her own bread much to the delight of her family. She touched many lives during her life and was a pillar of the Argyle Head community. She will be much missed by Ernie Forbes whom she took under her wing fondly calling him her "adopted son". Shirley was a devoted member of the Herbert W. Armstrong Church and attended conventions all over the Maritimes. She was predeceased by her siblings, Seymour, Thatcher "Tom", Jeanette Anthony, Wentworth "Wynt", Ernest "Ray", Alden, Ruth Nickerson, Margaret Morgan and Elizabeth "Betty" Doucette. There will be no visitation or memorial service by request. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sweeny's Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Yarmouth. A graveside gathering will be held on Saturday, November 13 at 11:00 a.m. at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Argyle Head.
