Alexander Cockrell was born about 1792 In Powell Valley VA according to research done by Evelyn Smith Fleming in about 1984. Much of her research was oral history from her grandfather, William Sherman Cockrell.
William Sherman told her that his father told him Alexander had gone to Riley, Kansas to visit his sons where he became ill, died and was buried.
Search of the Riley Cemetery where other Cockrell family members are buried does not show a grave marker.
There are Cockrell graves in a row for: Mordecai and Keziah, Thomas Jefferson and Keziah, Julia and William Craig, Amanda Pearlina Cockrell and William Ames. Just north of Mordecai is a vacant space with no marker owned by Felix Cockrell and is presumed to be the grave of Alexander Cockrell.
He was married to Sarah Helms and they had 12 children whose names we have currently. She is buried at Buffalo Cemetery, Wilson County, Kansas.
David Moses, Mordecai, Elizabeth, George, Celia Ann, Alexander (Jr), Simon B, Thomas Jefferson, Julia A., Felix Grundy, Easter (or Esther) and Francis Marion who died very young. Elizabeth and Celia Ann died in infancy.
