John Peter Andersen, 77, a former public school teacher, died in Denver, Colorado on April 6, 2022. He was born on October 25, 1944 in Charles City, Iowa. Growing up he was an Eagle Scout and a proud graduate of Charles City High School's class of 1963. Following undergraduate study at the University of Denver, he served in the Peace Corps in Salem, India. Upon his return to the US, he earned a master's degree in education at the University of Northern Colorado.

John taught math and Spanish at West Middle School, Overland High School, and Cherry Creek High School for a combined 31 years.

John's curiosity and service to the community continued beyond retirement. Most notably to gardens and music. He volunteered at the Denver Botanical Gardens for over a decade and became an expert in growing cactus and succulents.

John also took up piano, volunteered at the Colorado Symphony Orchestra and made sure all of his grandchildren had a piano to play.

John will be remembered for his quick wit and passion for life, friendships, and family.

John is survived by his wife, step-son, son, daughter, sister, former wife, and five grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held in Denver and in Charles City in coming months, details to follow. In lieu of flowers or gifts, donations can be made in memory of John Andersen to the Iowa Fossil and Prairie Center or Denver Botanic Gardens.
