Sanford Byrd Waldrip was born in Georgia, one of ten children of Rev. William Waldrip and Margaret Flowers Waldrip. Rev. Waldrip was a planter and itinerant Methodist minister, moving his family every few years. Hi son moved along with him, from Georgia through Alabama, until he met his future wife.

Sanford Byrd Waldrip married Frances Elizabeth "Nettie" Sears, October 23, 1853, in Rockford, Coosa Co., Alabama. He went by "Byrd" and was a farmer and a devout Methodist, beloved by all. After Byrd came home from the Civil War, he and Nettie moved from Rockford to a farm in Autauga County, and then to a farm in Holtville where they lived out the rest of their days. Their son and family lived with them, and their daughters and families lived nearby; when they moved, they all moved together. Byrd's brother Asa and his family stayed in Rockford. Byrd was a founding member of Sears Chapel in Rockford, a member of Pine Level Methodist Church in Autauga Co., and a faithful member of Cains Chapel in Holtville.

Civil War: Pvt. Co G, 2nd Alabama Cavalry. March 26, 1862, Rockford, Ala. He met his brother Asa and was assigned to Asa's unit during the Battle of Atlanta as: Pvt. Co. H, 12th La. Inf. En. Roll of Prisoners of War, C. S. A., Paroled Greensboro, N. C., April 26, 1865.
