Died after a long illness aged 57 years 10 months, the son of Elijah and Eliza Sherman Bassett. Born in Java, Wyoming County and removed with his parents to Warsaw when 5 years of age. At an early age he commenced learning the printing business. He was an employee of the Buffalo Commercial when the war broke out and enlisted 5/7/1861, for 2 years in Co. C 21st Reg. NY Vol. under command of Col. Wm. F. Rogers. He was an active soldier in several battles, was severly wounded at the battle of Antietam and was discharged 5/18/1863. Afterward he returned to Warsaw and entered the office of the Wy. Democrat established by the late John Ransom, where he remained for 3 years when he became foreman and manager of the Western New Yorker which position he held for 25 years. He married Eliza Jane Choate, daughter of Alonzo Choate, who together with 3 sons, Hubert, John and Harold Bassett who survives him. He leaves also 1 brother, Charles S. Bassett of Castile, a soldier in the 136th Reg. and 5 sisters, Mrs. A.J. Andrews of Batavia; Mrs. Richard Taylor; and Miss Ellen Bassett of Warsaw; Mrs. Baldwin and Mrs. Whiting and Mrs. Burland.
