Helen F. Simpson was born July 20, 1913, in Boone, Iowa, the daughter of William and Bertha (Weston) Batt. Helen attended Algona High School and was part of the last class to graduate from the Bryant School in 1931. She worked at East End Grocery Store for six years.
On August 18, 1949, Helen was united in marriage to John Simpson in Estherville, Iowa. After their marriage the couple lived on the family farm east of Whittemore. Helen enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, watching sports and working crossword puzzles.
Helen died Sunday, January 27, 2008, at the Algona Manor Care Center, where she had been a resident since June of 2005. She was 94.
She is survived by her daughter, Marilyn Benson of Algona; grandsons, Brett and Cheryl Benson of Minneapolis, Minnesota; Kevin and Kim Benson of Whittemore, Iowa; Steve and Jean Benson of Cherokee, Iowa; grandson-in-law, Terry Gaedke of Algona, Iowa; great-grandchildren, Brittany, Logan, Ben, Brock, Chad, Liana and Nathan. Also surviving are four sisters, Edith Potter and Ruth Hauenstein both of Emmetsburg, Iowa; Dorothy Edwards of North Platte, Nebraska, Doris Lewis of Westside, Iowa and many nieces and nephews.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John; son-in-law, Charles Benson; granddaughter, Debra Gaedke; six brothers, Robert, John, Orville, George, William and Verne Batt and a sister, Edna Batt.
