Alton Monroe Backues, Sr., 84, of Iris St., Carlsbad, NM, passed away Monday, July 11, 2022 at his home. Cremation has taken place and the family is having a graveside service at 10 a.m. Friday, July 29, 2022 at Carlsbad Cemetery in the old section (Division C, Block 5, Lot/Row 2, Space 3). All are welcome to attend.

Alton Monroe Backues, Sr., 84, of Iris St., Carlsbad, NM, passed away Monday, July 11, 2022 at his home, peacefully with family by his side. Cremation has taken place.
Alton was born July 1, 1938 in Roswell, NM to Ruby and John Backues. He proudly served our country as a Sea Bee in the Navy for 20 years. He married Mary Elizabeth ONeal, the love of his life in 1972. In 1973 brought his family back to Carlsbad, NM to be close to his family. He worked for IMC for 20 years and retired a second time. After retirement he followed his dream buying a motor home and traveling throughout the United States. His talents were many, he was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He was always there to help someone in need and offer advice.
He was preceded in death by his parents Ruby and John Backues, son, Alan Harbison, brother Bill Backues, sisters Ruth Tarvin and Ida Faye Smith.
Alton left behind the love of his life, his wife of 49 years Mary Elizabeth Backues; daughters Rawnie McKibben, Debbie Brown, Patty Hamel, son Alton Backues Jr, and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Grave side service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, July 29, 2022 at Carlsbad Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the Carlsbad Veterans Honor Guard. A Celebration of Life will be held following the service. 2208 Iris St. Carlsbad, NM 88220
