John Edward Spark was born in Fair Play, Grant, Wisconsin, 17 March 1852, son of Thomas and Maria (Rick) Spark. He spent his youth in the Fair Play area. His mother died when he was about 6 years old. His father remarried and several years later they moved to Clay County, Kansas.

John, who had been employed on the dam, drowned in the Republican River near Clay Center, Kansas. According to "The Times Newspaper", Thursday June 9, 1892, Mr. Spark remained at the river at noon on Wednesday saying to the boss that he was not going to work in the afternoon, but would put a man in his place. After the men left he stripped for a bath. He was seen by a couple of men who were working on the south side and who had brought their dinners. No attention was paid to him until a few minutes later, when they still noticed his clothing on the bank but could not see anything of Spark. They searched but didn't find him.

His body was discovered on Saturday morning nearly three miles down the river, " The Times", June 16, 1892.
