John Cunningham was born in Seattle, Washington to James Cunningham and Mary Jane Mills. He served in World War I as a chauffeur first class in the 58th Balloon Company Air Service. He enlisted on March 8, 1918 and was discharged on August 25, 1919 and was overseas from October 21, 1918 to July 18, 1919. He married Frances R. Burke, (daughter of John Burke and Sarah O'Donnell) on July 21, 1928 in Multnomah, Oregon. John and Frances had no children (according to family lore, he was kicked in the groin by a mule in WWI and could not have children). According to military records, he was 10% disabled on the day of discharge. John died in the VA Hospital in Portland, Oregon of bronchogenic carcinoma. John's siblings were: Mary Florence (John Audett), James Roger (Ella Thostenson), Joseph Henry (Yvonne Goulet), Rose, Olive D. (James Carmody), Edna, and Arthur.
