EMPORIA GAZETTE, 13 May 1972-STUDENT AT KSTC KILLED IN SHOOTING ACCIDENT ON FRIDAY
A 20-year-old Teachers College student died Friday afternoon in an Emporia hospital after a shooting incident in an apartment near the college. Emporia police have classified the incident as an accident. Ronald H. Layher of Hays died at approximately 3 p.m. Friday, according to the authorities. An autopsy ordered by Assistant Lyon County Attorney Darrell Meyers, acting in the abscence of County Attorney Philip E. Winter, was to be performed this morning. Police said that Mr. Layher was struck in the forehead by a .22-caliber slug from a revolver which was being handled by 21-year-old Benjamin T. Owens. They said that the incident occurred at about 1 p.m. in an apartment at 301 West Eleventh Ave., which the two men shared. Although investigation of the incident is continuing, the shooting is considered an accident, police officials said.

Graveside services for Mr. Layher will be held Monday at 10:30 a.m. in Mount Allen Cemetery in Hays. They will be conducted by the Rev. Harold A. Wisner, pastor of the United Presbyterian Church in Hays. The Blair Colonial Mortuary in Emporia and the Wilson Mortuary in Hays are in charge of arrangements.
Ronald Layher, who was born Sept. 22nd, 1951, in Colorado Springs, Colo., is survived by his parents, Robert F. and Marian Alex Layher, of the home; one brother, Lieut. Robert F. Layher Jr., Camp Pendleton, Calif.; one sister, Mrs. John P. (Lydia Ann) Clancey, Huntington Beach, Calif.; and his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Ann M. Layher, Los Angeles, Calif.

HAYS-- The graveside service for Ronald Layher, 20, Hays who died in Emporia following a shooting accident at his apartment, will be at 10:30 am Monday at the Mt. Allen cemetery, Hays, the Rev. Harold A. Wisner officiating.
Emporia police said Ronald, a sophomore at Emporia State college, died at 4 pm Friday in an Emporia hospital after a .22 caliber pistol bullet struck him in the head. Benjamin Owens, 21, Miami, Okla., an Emporia State junior and Layher's roommate, was examining the weapon when it discharged, police said. The shooting, which occurred at about 1:10 pm Friday, appeared to be accidental, a police spokesman said.
Ronald was a Hays resident for 18 years and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Hays.
Survivors are the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert F. Layher, Hays; a brother, Lt. Robert Layher jr., Camp Pendleton, Calif.; a sister, Mrs. John Clancey, Hunting Beach, Calif.; and a grandmother, Mrs. Anna Layher, Los Angeles, Calif. Friends may call after 1 pm Sunday at the Wilson funeral home, Hays. The family suggests memorials to the First Presbyterian Church.
