Barbara Jean Call slipped away peacefully in the presence of her husband and her daughters, on Wednesday July 20th at her home. Barb was born on November 20th, 1937 in Detroit, MI to Frank and Anna (Lorenz) Allen.
In 1954 she met the love of her life Amon (Burt) in Alanson, MI. Burt and Barb were married for 67 years and raised 6 amazing daughters often referred to as the Call Girls.
Barb drove school bus for Rockford Public Schools for 28 years and was loved dearly by the students on her bus. Due to her short 4'-8" stature, there were wooden blocks added to her pedals so that she could reach them.
As a young family they enjoyed camping and fishing at Interlochen State Park and at Aubrey Falls, Canada. In their retirement they traveled in their 36' Country Aire motor home and accidently landed in Yuma, AZ. They eventually wintered for 27 years in Yuma and made great memories with cherished friends at Cactus Garden RV Park. Barb was an avid dart player and loved playing Bingo. She also loved to knit and crochet and made beautiful Barbie dresses adorned with beads. She could create anything her girls requested including a sweater with four head holes to fit four people for the ugly Christmas Sweater contest. She was using up the rest of her yarn in the recent days knitting hats for the Premature babies at the hospital. Her many masterpieces stretch across the country for many to treasure.
She and Burt loved to garden and work in the yard together. She was always barefoot and even when she was sitting still her feet were still moving. During the last few months while she was battling cancer, she continued to make jokes and tell stories. She referred to her Oncologist as her Stud Muffin and made sure to thank each and every doctor and nurse that helped her before leaving the hospital.
Barb is survived by her loving husband and amazing caregiver, Burt Call; her six beautiful daughters and their spouses, Ragene & Steve Soules, Cindie & Paul Anthes, Laurie & Bill Simkins, Kim & Tom Newton, Annette & Brett DeGraaf, and Brenda Quackenbush; twelve grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her brother, Jimmy Allen; and a sister, Shirley Campbell.
