Mr. Martin was born on Dec. 24, 1918, in Newman, a son of Wilson and Ella Mitchell Martin. He married Betty B. Culton on March 22, 1941, in Louisiana, Mo. She survives.
Also surviving are six daughters, Beverly Deptula of Fisher, Judith (Phillip) Landes of Paris, Ill., Karen (Larry) Gross of Dewey, Kathy Haskins of Martinsville, LaDonna (Michael) Moehring of Newman and Valerie (Donald) Kappel of Palatine.
Also surviving are 19 grandchildren, John Martin (Nancy) Wamsley, Kimberly (Rick) Sparrow, Angela (Thomas) Hawkins, Susan Rosenbeck, Catherine (Kyle) Sprau, Christian Landes, Jason (Lynda) Landes, Nathan (Alicia) Landes, Matthew (Dana) Hughey, Amanda (John) Allen, Max (Dena) Gross, Jennifer (Jeffrey) Boyll, Brian Haskins, Joshua Moehring, Adam (Denise) Moehring, Allyson Moehring, Logan (Christina) Kappel, Jesse Kappel and Lucas Kappel. Mr. Martin was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and one sister.
Mr. Martin served a total of 28 years in the U.S. Postal service, 11 years as a rural carrier and 17 years as the postmaster in Newman. Prior to that, he spent three years in the military, serving with the Army Signal Corps during World War II. After that, he worked at a frozen food locker plant for four years.
Mr. Martin was an active member of the First Christian Church of Newman and the Newman American Legion.
After Mr. Martin retired from the postal service in December of 1978, he was able to enjoy the great outdoors, gardening, camping and his family for many years.
