Mr. Whitton was born in Kentucky July 25, 1863, moved to Illinois when a boy and came to Iowa in 1892.
For several years Mr. Whitton was engaged in the mercantile business in Moravia and later, until January 1918, had an insurance agency here. He at that time moved to Des Moines and became special agent for the Phoenix Fire Insurance Company from which he was retired in October 1933.
He was active in the Methodist Church in Moravia during the time he lived here and at the time of his death was a member of Grace Methodist Church of Des Moines.
He was also a member of Antiquity Lodge No. 252, A.F. & A.M. of Moravia, the Knight Templar of Albia and Kaaba Shrine of Davenport, Iowa.
November 21, 1894 he was married to Ella F. Lawrence in Ottumwa, Iowa. The widow and one daughter, Eunice P., survive.
Mr. Whitton was one of a family of fifteen children of John Doty and Amanda Jane (Porter) Whitton, eight of whom survive; Amanda Belle Lewis, Mary J. Clemens, Nancy A. Harris, Louisa E. Murray, Sally Ann Lansberry, Andrew Tandy, George Scott and William Robert Whitton.
Those who predeceased him are: Pleasant Hardy, Ellen F., James Easton, John Samuel, Martha Susan, and Thomas M. Whitton.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., March 14 at the E. Carl White Funeral Home in Des Moines with Rev. W. L. Ewing of Grace Methodist Church officiating. Masonic services were held and burial made at Ottumwa.
