Son of William & Catherine Garren Sumner, who had moved from NC to Gilmer Co, GA by 1840. No legible tombstones have been found for William & Catherine; however, Gilmer Co census data indicates that William died between 1860-1870; Catherine died between 1870-1880. Sumner family history says that William & Catherine had 11 children; it appears that three older sons may not have moved to Georgia.
Jesse Sumner, age 17, is listed with his parents in 1850 census of Gilmer Co, GA. Jesse Sumner & Elizabeth Sheriff were married August 30, 1855, Gilmer Co, GA; Bk 2, Pg 67. Identity of her parents are unknown.
By 1860, Jesse & Elizabeth had moved to Arkansas; they are listed in 1860 census of Davis Township, Saline Co, AR. Jesse is shown as age 26; Elizabeth as age 21. They have two children: John C. C. Sumner, age 3, born in GA; and James F. Sumner, age 8 mos, born in Arkansas.
They are still living in Arkansas in 1870 census. Ages shown for Jesse & Elizabeth are obviously in error:
