The family lived in the Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory and Delaware County, Oklahoma before moving to Thurston County, Washington. John worked for the Northern Pacific Railroad and with his brothers supported his mother and grandmother Elizabeth Fisher Nelson McKown.
John "met" Mary Catherine Bishop when a family member of Mary's told her that they knew a nice man that she should meet. Mary lived in Kansas. John and Mary exchanged letters and eventually met and were married in Montesano, Washington June 4, 1926. They returned to Kansas and lived in Peck and Haysville. They raised four children together in Peck, two sons and two daughters.
John died October 17, 1974. He and Mary were married for forty eight years.
