Born to unwed parents: William Emmet Charlton & Dora Hess (aka: Keutemeyer) on Sauvie's Island, Oregon. His mother was about 14 years old at the time of his birth, noted by trial editorials.

Raised entirely by maternal grandmother, Sarah Susan Duvall Hess Keutemeyer Greenman and her 2nd husband, Henry Keutemeyer.
Married about July 1899 to Caroline "Carrie" Lohkamp.
Father of Evelyn Keutemeyer Grimes (Her maternal aunt Augusta's married surname).

Went by "Al Keutemeyer" until a few years after the murder trial of his stepfather, William Lonrut . He admitted to shooting him in self-defense and was acquitted of murder by the Jury.

The Trial was held on 21 Nov - 25 Nov 1900 and the news articles were very detailed as to the happenings and the familial connections between residents on the large isolated Sauvie's Island located in the Columbia River northwest of Portland.

After his divorce, he worked as a cook in Portland and remarried Mrs May Hundley Kimble under the name of "William A Hess" on 14 Jan 1910. Appears as "Albert Hess" in Chehalis, WA during the Apr 1910 census.

On 15 December, his wife, Ellen Julia Arneson Clark Hess files for divorce due to desertion by "William Albert Hess" in Portland, OR.

Hess consistently mis-identified his biological father as born in Ireland. His mother, Dora, was also born on Sauvie's Island. That information matches up with his age in months/days/years on his marriage registration + "Albert Hess" living in Chehalis just after his wife's death in March 1910.
His Death certificate has his father's place of birth as KY and his mother as Oregon, despite her surname oddly listed as "Allen".

She may be the same "Dora McElroy" (Memorial: 139300456) buried in the same plot within this cemetery -- no dates listed at F/G.

[Dora Hess, b. abt March 1861, Sauvie's Island -- was the daughter of John Henry Hess and Sarah Susan Duvall. They married on 10 Nov 1859 in Portland, OR by Rev. Thos. H. Pearce, but it is HIGHLY LIKELY John Hess was marrying bigamously since his wife, Sibby, was alive at the time of his death and distinctly acknowledged as his legal widow in his Yamhill county probate in 1873. Dora Hess Keutemeyer, living on Sauvie's Island, was also acknowledged as one of his legal heirs of his estate. It was also stated in the papers at the time of the Murder Trial, that she was not legitimate. She also accused her mother, Sarah, of killing her father, John... Which did not happen. It appears murder was attempted, and somehow he survived 22 bullets to his body. ]

His Death certificate lists him as "William A Hess " with "Charleton" clearly written in a different ink and handwriting. He never went by this surname in his lifetime and only disclosed his paternity on medical records which were used to complete the DC.
