By todays standards, Ethel Mae would have been considered "Special Needs" or mentally handicapped. It is thought that, she probably had a form of Downs Syndrome. Although, her disability, was never addressed by a Doctor. Whereas, she was child-like in most ways. She also had a firey temper, to go along with it.
However, she was brilliant in other ways. It is said that, she would create, the most inticate, detailed Paper Dolls. Ethel, also loved to color pictures. In doing so, her favorite crayon to use, was the color purple.
After the death of her parents, she was cared for by her immediate family. As a young adult, she was never put into a home, for adults with Special Needs. Her siblings, shared the responsibiltiy, of caring of her. Her sister Pearl, was thought to have, taken care of her the most.
Obviously, Ethel Mae never married, nor had any children of her own. However, she did love children. It is said that, she was very kind and loving, to the babies born into the Fleener family. Ethel, did live out her last days, in a Nursing Home, in Oakland City, Indiana.
