Joel William Schaafsma, age, 65, of Ada, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, July 12, 2022.
He was preceded in death by his son Benjamin.
He is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Judy; children Jake and Deanna Schaafsma, Corinn and Nick Truer, Alex Schaafsma; grandchildren, Eliza, Liam, and Zeke Truer, Isaac Schaafsma; brothers and sisters, Rick and Sharon Schaafsma, Maud and Frank Jefferis, Phil and Amy Schaafsma; many nieces and nephews.
Joel had a passion for community service and for helping the underprivileged. He spent several years working with the prisoner reentry program, and many years as a community health worker focusing on those with the greatest needs. He loved his family – especially his grandchildren, and enjoyed being outside, working in the yard and woods, burning brush and giving his grandchildren lawn tractor rides.
A Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 a.m, Saturday, July 16, 2022, at Cascade Fellowship Christian Reformed Church, 6655 Cascade Rd. SE, Grand Rapids, MI, with Rev. Bill Whitt officiating. Friends may meet with the family from 4:00 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, July 15, at Cascade Fellowship Christian Reformed Church.
Memorial contributions in Joel's memory may be made to the Cascade Fellowship CRC Benevolence Fund.
