He was a career Marine officer who served in World War II and the Korean War, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1963 with 22 years of distinguished service. Mr. Joyner enjoyed a long and successful second career in Towson, Md., in sales with Genstar, later American Stone. He was a longtime member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Baltimore, where he served as a vestryman and lay reader. He was an active member of the Saint Andrews Society. He and his wife of 59 years, Helen Reid Sutton Joyner, nicknamed Sam, relocated to Williamsburg in 1998.
His life will be celebrated by his adored and devoted wife, Sam; daughter and her husband, Reid and Michael Abell of Williamsburg; daughter and her husband, Pamela and Claude Freeman of Charlotte, N.C.; daughter and her husband, Lang and Joe Etheridge of Norfolk, Va.; grandchildren, Peyton Freeman of New York City, Shane Abell and his wife, Jill, of Atlanta, Ga., J.Q. Freeman of Charlotte, N.C., Trey, Reid and Stewart Etheridge of Norfolk; brother, Francis of Goldsboro, N.C.; two sisters, Elizabeth Brown of Northern Virginia and Margaret Baechtold of Sarasota, Fla.
His family and countless friends will miss him, and always will cherish the memories of his boundless optimism, sense of humor and joie de vivre.
