James was united in marriage to Miss Emma Brissenden January 7, 1875. Seven children were born to this union, six daughters: Mrs, H. E, Murray, Mrs. W. A. Smith, and Mrs. Claude Fields, there was also a son: Robert Earl.

Mr. Duff served as a Pvt. in the 1st North Carolina Cavalry, CSA. Other sources indicate that James Duff was a 1st Serg. in Co.F and Co.A 6th North Carolina Cavalry,and in Co.F,7th Battalion North Carolina Cavalry , CSA .

James N. Duff was the brother- in - law of David G. Tilley , and their burial plots are side by side .
