He is possibly from the Bowen Quaker family of Dunnings Creek Monthly Meeting of Bedford County, Pennsylvania. There are limited records of the Bowen family in the Quaker records.

Johnathan Bowen and his wife arrived in Beford County between 1788-1790. They are listed in Bedford County in the 1790 Census which lists 3 Male, 6 Females in the household. In the Dunnings Creek Meeting on 10-17-1795: William Kenworthy, Johathan Bowen and Anthony Blackburn, acting as a committee on behalf of Dunnings Creek Meeting purchased a tract of 6 acres at Spring Meadow to be held in trust for Dunnings Creek Meeting.
Children of Jonathan and Ann (Blackburn) Bowen: Sarah Bowen m. James Allison; Alice Bowen m. James Smith; Jane Bowen m. James Gordon (disowned); Elizabeth Bowen m. Thomas M. Blackburn; Benjamin Bowen m. Mary Fisher; Isabel Bowen m. John Calliahan.
