Mrs. Burchfield's body was discovered in the dining room of the residence by her daughter, Miss Betty Ruth Burchfield. She was alone in the residence at the time of her death.
Sheriff D. W. Snider stated that a coroner's jury, composed of J. J. Collum, J. R. Peeples, Shed Hightower, O. J. Woods, J. F. McCain and L. G. Ross, after investigation, rendered the following official verdict: "We, the jury of six men, have investigated the death of Mrs. Bob Burchfield and have reached a decision that she took her own life by shooting herself behind the right ear with a .22 rifle."
Mrs. Burchfield was a woman of strong character, high intelligence, a loving and solicitous wife and mother, a helpful neighbor, and was possessed of affable and lovable disposition. She had been in ill health for many months and had been treated at Grenada Hospital on the morning of the day of her death. Intense migraine headaches had necessitated daily treatment for a long period. Indications about her sewing machine located in the dining room led to the belief that she had been working and sewing a few minutes before her death.
She was a consecrated Christian and a faithful member of the Tomnolen Baptist Church.
The Reverend J. R. Sheedy, Baptist Minister of Eupora, was assisted by the Reverend Mr. Carpenter in conducting the rites at Milligan Springs near Stewart. Oliver Funeral Home of Eupora was in charge of burial arrangements in the Milligan Springs Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers were the Reverend R. O. Pittman, Barney Jacks, Joe Cobb, Johnny Huffinan, Russell Embry, G. V. Haney, James Dean, and Oscar Woods.
Mrs. Burchfield was born in Choctaw County on June 20, 1900. Besides her husband she is survived by three daughters, Miss Bobby Jane Burchfield of Greenwood, Miss Betty Ruth Burchfield of Tomnolen, and Mrs. R. L. Crowell of Tomnolen; two sisters, Mrs. J. T. Trussell, Ackerman, and Mrs. L. L. Gary, Slate Springs; four brothers, E. N. Blain, Mobile, Ala., John Blain of Greenwood, W. N. Blain of Greenwood, and W. H. "Boots" Blain of Tomnolen.
