Daniel Columbus "Dan" West was born on Apr. 19, 1868 in Scott Co., Tennessee. He was the son of General Taylor West (1845-1925) and Nancy Sexton (1845-1917), both born in South Carolina. Taylor and Nancy are buried in Peaceful Rose Garden Cemetery located in Scott Co., Tennessee.

Daniel's father, Taylor, was the son of Reason West (1807-1863) and Pheriba Marcum (1813-1880), both born in Tennessee. Reason died from disease in Bowling Green, Kentucky while serving in the Union Army during the Civil War.

Daniel's mother, Nancy, was the daughter of James Sexton (1818-1901) and Sarah McPeters (1823-1904). James was born in Tennessee, Sarah in North Carolina. Both died in Campbell Co., TN.

On May 15, 1890 in Scott Co., TN, Daniel married Rachel King (1872-1963). She was the daughter of Elisha S. King (1837-1892) and Rossannah "Rosey" Duncan (1842-1936 ?). Elisha was the son of Thomas Murray King (1790-1880). Thomas was the patriarch of the King family in McCreary Co., KY having moved to the Marsh Creek area, then part of Whitley Co., in 1829 from Campbell Co., TN.

Daniel and Rachel were married for 52 years and had five known children. They were Salena West (1893-1927), Minnie West (1895- ?), Maude West (1896- ?), Nola West (1897- ?) and Columbus M. West (1900-1964).

Daniel died on May 19, 1842 in Oneida, Scott Co., TN at the age of 74. He was buried in Peaceful Rose Garden Cemetery in Scott County, where his parents are buried. He has a military grave marker for his service in the 4th KY Infantry during the Spanish-American War in the US Army.

Wife Rachel died in 1963 in Herrin. Williamson Co., Illinois at the age of 91. She was buried in the Herrin City Cemetery. Her daughter Salena and son Columbus are also buried in the Herrin City Cemetery, as are two of Rachel's sisters, Mary Jane King Simpson (1875-1963) and Sarah Elizabeth King Daugherty (1864-1940).
