Booneville, Ky. - Monroe E. Barrett, 84, of Route 3, passed away Friday, July 12, 2002, at the Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington, KY, following a long illness (heart ailment).

A native Owsley Countian, he was born on June 12, 1918, to Daniel W. and Mattie Bowman Barrett. He had been a member of the Booneville United Methodist Church since 1929, a member of the Masonic Lodge #939, and had been Master three times. He was a veteran of World War II and a lifetime member of Chapter #21, Disabled American Veterans. He believed strongly in the work of the Division of Fish and Wildlife and was charter member of the Owsley County Sportsman Club. Mr. Barrett was a retired mail carrier. He, also, was District Deputy Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Kentucky from 1967-1968. A member of the Owsley County Saddle Club, he was instrumental in reviving the Daniel Boone Days in Owsley County.

He was the widower of Claris Brewer Barrett, and is survived by three sons, Harold K. Barrett, Daniel H. Barrett (and wife, Peggy), and Thomas W. Barrett (and wife, Angela), all of Booneville, KY; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Moffatt and Ralph Barrett.

Visitation was held on Sunday evening from 5 to 9 p.m. at Searcy and Strong Funeral Home. Funeral Services were Monday, July 15, 2002, 2:00 p.m. at the Booneville United Methodist Church with Rev. Jamie Brunk officiating. Burial was in the Seale-Bowman Cemetery with Searcy and Strong Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Pallbearers were Scott Barrett, Ross Barrett, Nick Barrett, Jimmie Herald, Herman Spencer, Donnie Seale and Gary McIntosh.
