Death of Mr. A. R. A'Beckett Residents of the district received quite a shock on Saturday morning when they heard that Mr. A. R. A'Beckett, the shire engineer, had died suddenly at his residence. He had been confined to his bed for a couple of days with a cold, but there was nothing to suggest that his condition was serious. On Saturday morning he passed peace fully away, the cause of his death being heart failure. He was an extremely conscientious officer, and no man could have served the council more faithfully. Honest and straight forward in all his dealings, he endeavored at all times to carry out the duties of his office without fear or favor. During the five years that he served the shire, we frequently came in contact with him, but in all that time we never heard him say an unkind word of anyone. He was 58 years of age at the time of his death. The funeral took place on Monday morning, the remains being interred in the Alexandra cemetery. The members of the Masonic Lodge marched at the head of the cortege, and members of the Shire Council and all the shire employees followed the hearse to the place of interment, in addition to a very large number of district residents. The Rev. S. H. Burridge conducted the funeral service, and Mr. A. E. Howell had charge of the mortuary arrangements. At Monday's meeting of the Shire Council, the President (Cr. Wylie) moved-"That this Council place on record its deep regret at the passing away of Mr. A. R. A'Beckett, who for the past five years filled the position of shire engineer. 'By his death the Shire has lost a valued, faithful and conscientious officer, who in all his dealings was straight and above board."--The motion was seconded by Cr. Lade, and carried, all councillors standing while the President put the motion.
