Manning Jacobs Dukes, 89, of Newberry, died Monday, June 27, 2022 surrounded by her loving family.

Born on December 6, 1932 in Newberry, she was a daughter of the late Manning Jacobs and Sara Abrams Jacobs Shannon and the late Hugh Shannon.

Manning was a shining light to this world, always giving her time, her talents, and her smile to those around her. She actively worked as a registered nurse for 46 years, was the owner and operator of Dukes Florist as well as an Avon representative for 42 years.

She was an active member of First Baptist Newberry, volunteering, leading, and participating in a variety of church groups, such as the 50+ Fellowship Committee, the bereavement committee, Vacation Bible School, and Bible Study groups. She was a member of the Ruth Sunday School Class and the Tuesday morning Bible study group.

She was active in her community, where she volunteered as a Cub Scout and Girl Scout Leader, participated in outreach programs with Newberry College, assisted with the Newberry High School Tennis team, and was one of the original volunteers at the Newberry Opera House. She participated in Ritz theater productions, volunteered at Manna House and different elementary schools, visited friends and strangers at the nursing homes to provide comfort and support during hard times. For her legacy of service, Manning received both the Book of Golden Deeds Award and the 2019 Newberry Rotary Lay Person of the Year Award.

Manning was the backbone of her family. She taught them all how to love a little harder, laugh a lot louder, and hug tighter. She was always there to support, encourage, and brag on everyone she loved. She was always a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend.

Manning, Wawa, Mom, Granny, Sister, Dukeyshoot, Friend – her heart was infinite, her smile contagious, and her devotion to family and God unending. She had a good sense of humor, loved to laugh and share a story. She was the neighborhood ambassador, riding around on the golf cart, participating in local festivities, and just being herself. Her prayer every day was to help someone, even if just with a smile or a hug, and each day she made a difference.

She is survived by a daughter, Sara Dukes of Newberry; son, Charlie Dukes (Laura) of Newberry; grandsons, Ben Dukes (Alicia) of Prosperity, Phillip Dukes (Jennifer) of Blair, and Christopher Dukes of Prosperity; great-grandchildren, Kaeleigh and Jared Dukes; sisters, Mary Kay S. Brice (Billy) of Newberry and Jane S. Huffstettler (Charles) of Loganville, GA; numerous nieces and nephews, Lisa Dukes (Jim), Kim Dukes Frobom (Eric), Bill Brice (Lacey), Scott Brice (Sarah), Michael Brice (Melissa), Jenny Buckaloo (Bill), Beth Rosenbalm (Brian), Mary Katherine Cloer (Trent), great-nieces, and great-nephews; four godchildren; and Toombs Lewis who she considered to be her other son.

Funeral services will be held at First Baptist Newberry on Friday, July 1, 2022 at 2:00 PM conducted by Rev. Dr. Albert Allen. Burial will follow the service at Rosemont Cemetery, Newberry.

A music celebration to honor Manning's life and faith will begin at 1:30 PM in the Sanctuary, prior to the service
