Daily Press 9 Oct 1968 – Newport News – Samuel Tilden Carpenter, 56, of 18 Berkeley Place, Newport News, died Tuesday in Riverside Hospital after a brief illness. A native of Hampton, he had been a Newport News resident for 20 years. He was a retired clerk for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway.
Mr. Carpenter was a trustee of Bethel Baptist Church, Tabb, served as Sunday School superintendent, teacher of the Men's Bible Class and was a deacon of the church. He was also a member of the Cosmopolitan Clubs, and a veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Elsie Page Carpenter; a daughter, Mrs. Beatrice Hoyt of Oakdale, CN; two sisters, Mrs. Maggie Thomas of Hampton and Mrs. Helen Carmines of Poquoson; two brothers', Lewis E. Carpenter and Irvin Carpenter of Hampton; his foster – mother, Mrs. Gilbert Walton of Hampton; and two grandchildren.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in Bethel Baptist Church, Tabb, by the Rev. David C. Anderson, assisted by the Rev. John Blackwell of Waverly. Burial will be in Peninsula Memorial Park. The body will be at the Amory Funeral Home. Grafton, until noon Thursday when it will be placed in the church.
