John Hughes
John F. Hughes, 21, machinist's mate, third class, was one of 158 American sailors killed when the U. S. S. Drexler, a destroyer, was sunk in a vicious 90-second attack by three Japanese suicide bombers off Okinawa, May 28, according to word recieved here.

He was the husband of Mrs. Cleo Lowery Hughes, 924 1/2 West Second Street, and the son of Mr. and Mrs. E. P. Hughes, 605 twenty-eighth street, Bettendorf.

A navy news release said that the Drexler had already been damaged by the first of the trio of suicide planes, and rolled over on her starboard side and sank in 49 seconds after the last bomber found the mark. There were 158 killed and 52 wounded out of 350 officers and men on board.
