THOMAS B. SAMMONS JR.

A memorial service for Thomas B. Sammons Jr., 79, who died at Rio Grande Regional Hospital Thursday [1 Aug 1991] after a brief illness, will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Episcopal Church in Pharr with the Rev. Robert F. DeWolfe officiating. The family will receive friends in the parish hall following the service.

Born July 12, 1912, in Mission, Mr. Sammons was the son of Valley pioneers Thomas B. Sammons Sr. and Lucy Board Sammons. He attended Shreiner Institute in Kerrville and the University of Texas-Austin, where he played in the Longhorn Band and was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. He married the former Gretchen Luedecke of Austin Nov. 24, 1934.

Mr. Sammons served with the U.S. Army in the European Theater during World War II. After the war, he returned to Mission where he was active for many years in the family businesses, Hayes-Sammons Hardware Co. and Mission Brand Chemical Co. He had lived in McAllen since 1964 and was publisher of Fiesta Magazine until his retirement in 1987.

A member of the Mission Rotary Club, Mr. Sammons served as Rotary district governor during the 1950s. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church where he served as vestryman and lay reader for many years, and he was a former member of the McAllen Medical Center Auxiliary.

Mr. Sammons was preceded in death by his parents, by his wife on Jan. 28, 1987, and by his sister, Elizabeth "Quita" Sammons Brazeal. He is survived by two daughters, Gail Sammons of McAllen and Sheridan Sammons Danforth of New London, N.H.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mr. Sammons' body was donated to the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston.
