Hendrikus was a Dutch civilian war casualty of World War II, killed in a catastrophic bombing of a kapok factory in Nijmegen. The factory was being used as an air raid shelter; on the night of October 2, 1944, it was sheltering nearly 150 people. During a German bombardment, it was struck by two firebombs, decimating the factory. Over 100 people were killed in the disaster, including many whole families.

The entire Alders family --- including Reinier, Adrianna, and nine of their ten children (only one daughter, away at boarding school, survived) were killed in the factory. The Alders family was completely devastated. Hendrikus died with his twin sister, Theresia.
