Leonard was born April 11, 1934, at Dallas to Emil and Christina (Drefs), joining 4 siblings.
Leonard grew up in the White River area. He entered the U.S. Army in 1956. After his discharge from the Army, he married "T.E".
Leonard went to work for Terrace Park Dairy, a career that lasted 28 years. He delivered to small towns around Winner, Murdo and Pierre.
The family moved to Winner to help his brother run the Westside Café. Missing the milk business, the family moved to Pierre. Leonard worked for Pierre Public Schools as he enjoyed working around the children. He enjoyed people – he liked to prank, scare or tell a story and make people laugh. Leonard loved hunting and being out in nature.
Grateful for having shared his life are 4 children; a sister; a friend, "T.H.", who visited him daily; eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
Leonard was preceded in death by his by his parents; sisters, Leona Parkis and Elta Frank; brother, Ervin Nieman; a special friend, Theo Brown; and one great-granddaughter, Bethany Schultz.
Services were held May 19 at Isburg Funeral Chapel in Pierre. Burial was at Winner City Cemetery.

Surviving are children: Deborah (Mark) Hiatt, Valerie (Roger) Williams, Wade Nieman, & Brett Nieman; Sister Annetta Almendinger; Grandchildren: Dan (Melissa) Hiatt, Erica Williams, Becky Hiatt, Katie (Mike) Schultz, Justin (Morgan) Nieman, Colter Nieman, Karson Nieman, Kaden Nieman. Seven great-grandchildren.
