Funeral services for William J. Smith, 89, who died Saturday at the Berry
nursing home in Osage, were held Wednesday afternoon at the Champion funeral
home with the Rev. Orville Meliquist officiating. Burial was in the Osage
cemetery.

Mr. Smith was born on October 3, 1861, in Dane County, Wis., the son of
Thomas and Anna Smith. He lived a short time in Lake City, Minn., and came
to Mitchell county with his parents when he was 11 years old. He spent the
rest of his life here.

On October 3, 1890, he was married to Clarissa Rice, who died in 1911. One
child, Mrs. Olive Lindeman, also preceded him in death as did five sisters.

Mr. Smith spent most of his boyhood around Mitchell, where his family lived
on a small farm.

He later became a farmer and also was employed by the late Dr. M. A. Hansen
of Osage for many years.
