Son of John Eken and Mary McQuigg.

According to a letter written on November 20, 1905 by George W. Aiken of Bellefontaine, Ohio, to his nephew John T. Aikin, Joseph and his brother John came over from Co. Antrim, Ireland, in 1790 and settled in Washington Co., Pennsylvania, where Joseph continued to live. One of Joseph's sons (David) was a clerk of court there.

According to Joseph's grandson, James Aiken Jr., of Jewett, Harrison County, Ohio, in a letter written to Jennie Aikin Cleland dated September 4, 1920, when he was 81 years of age, he said that his father, James Sr. (1801-1884), wrote his last name as Eakin, but his uncle David, who was a court clerk in Washington County, Pennsylvania, said that the family name should be spelled as Aiken and they all followed his advice.
