It is not known what happened to Kate Hempstead. She's disappeared from the records.

On the 23 Nov. 1910 marriage record for Edna when she married Charles B. Reynolds, her mother is listed as Christina John. Since a marriage record has not been found for Jeremiah and Christina, and since Kate is shown on the 1892 census with Jeremiah, it is assumed that Christina was Edna's stepmother.
