Joseph Ellison Bend was born Jan. 16th, 1883 to Lewis Bend, Jr. and Ida Wigton.
His father died when he was 4 and that really affected his life.
He had a brother Charles and two sisters Lois and Bernice.

His mother Ida remarried to a man with the last name Hawkins and they had a daughter Mabel, but he died soon as well.
Ida left her two boys Joseph and Charles with their grandfather Lewis Bend, Sr. on his dairy farm. But both boys ended up jumping on the RR and spending their lives working on the rails.
Ida moved near her brother-in law and married Henry Arthur Turton and lived in Nebraska with the three girls.

My Great Grandfather Joseph Ellison Bend had a thing for the ladies, especially Scandinavian women. He also sadly left and abandoned many of his many wives.
He first married my Great Grandmother Ida Amelia Christopherson who was of Norwegian descent. They married in Chicago, Illinois on January 23rd, 1905 .
They had my Grandmother Aileen Mae Bend in 1907, followed by baby brother Carl Joseph Bend in 1909. He left them sometime around 1910 and by the 1920 census, Ida was back in Illinois raising two children alone working in a box factory.
There was never a divorce between Joe and Ida.

Joe next married Exie Mae Adams in Elmore, Idaho on November 28th, 1913 and they had a baby boy Harvey in 1915 and a little girl Alma Irene Bend in 1917.
Unfortunately, Baby Harvey was scalded to death when a pot of scalding hot jam spilled on him.
Joe left this family as well.
He was then found in 1920 listed as married but not with his family, age 36 living in Shoshone, Idaho, and working as a brakeman.

In Glenns Ferry, Idaho November 7th, 1921 Joe married Nettie Kravig, a widow who had three daughters Viola, Amber and Delores. Nettie died in 1935 and Joe married Nora Ethel Jones July 15th, 1936 in Baker, Oregon and she died in 1950.

In April 1951, he married Emeline Latham, but they divorced in September 1951 in Canyon, Idaho, probably so he could marry Imogene Wilbur.
She was the daughter of Ziba Wilbur and Mary E. Blaisdell.
They married December 21st, 1951, the bride was 77 and the groom was 68.
He seemed to remain married until her death.
Joseph achieved Conductor status with the Union Pacific Railroad and died in 1965.

My grandmother Aileen didn't really know her father very well.
After Aileen and her brother Carl graduated High School, they went and visited him in Idaho.
Her brother ended up following his father into the RR business.
Joe's daughter Alma Irene, who goes by Irene Rollston did have a relationship with her father, attending his last wedding and apparently playing cards with him at the end of his life.

His cremated remains reside in Niche # 3095 in the Sunrise Corridor section
