James was born on January 25, 1843, in Harris County, Georgia. His father, Andrew Jackson Askew was 24 and his mother, Mary Thornton Copeland was 19.

James enlisted in the Confederate Army Co. H, 31st Volunteers (nicknamed Mountain Tigers), under Gen. Lawton Gordon Evans, Northern VA, Nov. 1861. He was wounded at Cold Harbor, Va. June 27, 1862 and discharged May 18, 1865 Columbus, Muscogee County, GA.

He married Louisa Meggs (Meigs) Worrell on July 12, 1866, in Harris County, Georgia. They had 12 children over 23 years. He died on April 9, 1912, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama at the age of 69.
