Alva Wallar's cremated remains were never request by his family after his death and are still available at Oregon State Hospital to be claimed by any relative.

Alva Wallar was born on 10/18/1897 in Polk County, in central Iowa. His mother, Georgia Oglevie, was born in Iowa in 1867. His father, Jacob Smiley Wallar, was born in Ohio in 1860. Jacob & Georgia were married about 1887.

Alva was the oldest of their children. His siblings (all born in Iowa) included: Ola, Lunda, Roy, Ora, and Joseph. His sister Ola died in infancy. His brother Joseph died in 1918 at the age of 18. Alva and his other three brothers survived to adulthood.

At the time of the 1900 census, Alva was 12 years old, living with his parents and brothers in Richland, Iowa where is father was farming. Although his younger brothers attended school for 9 months that year, Alva had attended only 6 months. Perhaps as the oldest son he was expected to work more on the farm. He did however graduate from high school and was able to read and write. As a teenage in 1905 he volunteered as the treasurer of his church's Sunday School.

During the 1910 census, Alva was 22 and living with his parents and brothers in Edmond which is part of the Oklahoma City metropolitan area, in central Oklahoma. Alva was working outside the home as a farm laborer.

As an adult he was tall (6 feet), slender (155 pounds), with brown eyes, black hair, and lots of freckles. On 3/2/1911 Alva married Lydia "Allene" Childers in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He was 23 and she was 18. They had three children, all born in Oklahoma: Cecil Levern (born in 1912), Doris Lucille (1913), and Orville Clare (1915).

In 1917 on the WWI draft registration form, he indicated he had served for 90 days as a private in the Oklahoma Militia. No dates or further details were given.

In 1917 he was working for his father, but by 1920 he had embarked upon a new career in a relatively new industry - automobile repair. For historic reference, at that time Ford was producing the Model T.

In the census of 1920 census, Alva was listed with Allene and their three children in Oklahoma City where he was employed as an automobile mechanic. During the 1930 census the family was living in Britton, Oklahoma (now an annex of Oklahoma City) and Alva was continuing his career as an auto mechanic. Newspaper accounts referred to his as a well-like master mechanic. In 1931 he and a partner went into business for themselves, specializing in Chevrolet service and parts as well as "wrecker service" for all cars.

Alva's father died in Edmond, Oklahoma on 3/18/1928. He was buried at Gracelawn Cemetery with his son Joseph.

On 10/20/1933 Alva & Allene divorced in Oklahoma. Before 1940 Alva married Iona "Ona" Adams. In the 1940 census Alva, Ona, and her son Rex Adams were living in Oklahoma City and Alva was still working as an auto mechanic. At least by 1942 Alva and Ona had divorced.

Alva's mother died in 1941. She was buried with Alva's father at Gracelawn Cemetery in Edmond, Oklahoma.

It is not known what brought Alva from Oklahoma to Oregon, but between 1943 and 1950 he moved to Portland where he was living during the 1950 census.

On 11/8/1956 he was admitted to the Oregon State Hospital, a residential facility in Salem, Oregon for the treatment of people with mental illness. After being a patient at the institution for 1 year and 8 months he died there on 7/9/1958. The cause of death was pneumonia complicated by emphysema, asthma which he had had for many years. In addition he had arteriosclerotic heart disease. Alva was 60 years old.

He was survived by his 2 ex-wives, 3 adult children, and 3 brothers, Ora, Roy and Lunda, all of whom were back in Oklahoma and Texas. They may have known little or nothing of Alva's circumstances. His remains were not claimed by his family so he was cremated at the hospital and his ashes stored at the hospital in copper urn #4295.

Meanwhile back in Oklahoma, Alva's 3 brothers died within a few years of Alva. Roy died in December 1958, just a few months after Alva. Brother Lunda died in 1960 and Ora died in 1964. Roy and Ora were buried at Gracelawn in Edmonds near their parents. Lunda was buried at Summit View Cemetery in Guthrie, Oklahoma.

Alva's son Orville became a mechanic for an airline. He married Jane (Kujawa) Tesina in 1952 in Chicago and was step-father to her two children, but never had children of his own. He died in 1970.

Alva's son Cecil was an oil field driller. In 1940 was an inmate at the Wyoming State Penitentiary in Rawlins where he was serving a 1-3 year sentence for attempted criminal assault. He entered in July 1939 and was paroled in July 1940. He married Ruby Butts in 1951. They never had children. Cecil died in 1980 in Winters, Texas of gangrene of the legs.

Alva's daughter Doris married Robert Garland Munday in 1933. Robert died in a plane crash in 1946. He was survived by Doris and their son. Doris married Ralph Merola in 1951. She died in 1998.

His first wife, Allene, died of arteriosclerosis in Dallas, Texas on 2/7/1980. His second wife, Ona, died in 1985.
