"Superior Woman Killed in Automobile Accident Near Cedar Lake Sunday"
Aitkin county witnessed its second fatal auto accident within five days when Mrs. Jos. Pomes, of 1525 Clough Avenue, Superior, was instantly killed Sunday afternoon aabout two-thirty o'clock on highway No. 2, just west of Cedar Lake. The body was taken to Aitkin.
Mrs. Pomes had been a guest of her niece, Mrs. Grace Sanderson, of Crosby Beach, for two weeks, and was on her way home with her son-in-law, Jos. Miller, who came for her owing to the critical illness of Mrs. Miller in Superior.
Two hitch-hikers hailed the Miller car and, after Miller had passed them he had evidently decided to pick them up, for he was seen to say something to Mrs. Pomes and then, as his car swerved a trifle, put on the brakes. The front wheels locked, throwing the car around directly against a car driven by Ray Butts, who was on his way to Crosby from Carlton where he is cashier in a bank. Mr. Butts was too close to stop and the front left part of his car was badly stove in. He was formerly cashier in the bank here and was on his way to Crosby to ship his furniture.
It appears that the Miller car was stopping when it struck the other car and that Mrs. Pomes had attempted to jump from the car. She had her head pinned against the roadbed by the top of the Miller car and was killed instantly.
Several people appeared in a few moments to lift the car upright and the hearse arrived from Aitkin to take the body to that town.
Mr. Miller was badly shaken up and received a bad cut over the nose but Mr. Butts was unharmed.
The dead woman was 65 years if age and a month ago moved to Superior from Missouri with her husband where they had purchased a farm. At the time of the accident he was on the farm building a house for himself and wife.
