Eliza Jane Titus was born 16 December 1801, Newtown, Long Island, the daughter of James Titus and Jane Debevoise. She was baptized 9 October 1808 in the Dutch Reform Church in Newtown, along with her brothers Edward and John. Eliza married 1st Henry C. Stoothoff, 10 September 1820 (Announcement: Long Island Star, Brooklyn, Wednesday 13 September 1820, Page 3). Unfortunately Henry died young and intestate 10 August 1848, and Eliza became the administrator of his estate. The surviving Stoothoff children were Francis P., James, Eliza, Margaret Ann, Henry and Agnes. Eliza married 2nd, Benjamin B. Whiteman (Will dated 23 January 1880, Eliza states she is the "widow of Benjamin B. Whiteman"). A marriage record has yet to be found but the marriage took place between the death of her first husband and the 1860 Census where Eliza and Benjamin are enumerated together. Benjamin married 1st Isabella Belinda Storms, 29 November 1821, Bergen, New Jersey, and they can be found living in Hackensack, Bergen, New Jersey in the 1850 Census with their children, Catherine and Andrew. The Census of 1860 finds Benjamin Whiteman and wife Eliza Jane in Hackensack Township with Andrew Whiteman, age 23, Theodore Post, age 16, William Hodge, age 18, and Margaret King, age 20. Benjamin predeceased Eliza 20 March 1872, Ridgewood, Bergen, New Jersey (Find A Grave Memorial 7229572), and he is interred with his first wife Belinda in the Ridgewood Cemetery. In 1880, Eliza Jane Whiteman, a widow, age 80, is living alone in the Town of Flushing, Queens, New York. She died 25 December 1885, in Flushing (New York, N. Y., U. S. Extracted Death Index, 1862-1948). Her will mentions, in addition to her husband Benjamin B. Whiteman, her children by Henry Stoothoff; Henry C., Francis, Margaret Ann Wilson and Agnes Robb.
