Leona M. Crawford, residing in South Bend, passed away at 6:15 p.m. Sunday, May 22, 2022 at Morningview Assisted Living, at the age of 97 years old. She was born April 18, 1925 in Bremen, IN; a daughter of the late Charles K. & Mamie (Adkins) Brown, and has remained a lifelong resident of this community.

Leona retired from the Internal Revenue Service in South Bend following 37 years of service, and worked for more than 20 years as a funeral assistant at Kaniewski Funeral Homes in South Bend and New Carlisle.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Gary & LeeAnn Crawford of South Bend; six grandchildren, Brian Crawford, Jason (Angie) Crawford, Beth (Aldrich) Baniaga, Becky (Dennis) Colvin, Connie Nyers, and Christine (Doug) Anderson, along with 14 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Lizzie, and Grace Thompson, along with four brothers, Cleatis "Bud", Ross, Orville, and Edgar Brown.

Leona was a longtime active member of South Side Church of God, where she sang in the choir for many years, and was active with the Speeders.

The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to Heather and Jenny from Southern Care Hospice, and to the staff at Morningview Assisted Living for the excellent care they offered to Leona.

Services will be at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, May 26, 2022 at the Palmer Funeral Home-Rive Park Chapel, 2528 Mishawaka Ave., South Bend, IN. Rev. Mary Stephens will officiate. Graveside services and burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11:00 until service time on Thursday at the funeral home. Palmer Funeral Homes – River Park Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
