Elizabeth Catherine (nee Maychark) Oltmer, 91, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, April 28, 2018 at Brookdale Assisted Living in Austin, TX. She was born on Thursday, December 16, 1926 in New York City to her loving parents Valentine Joseph and Josephine (nee Lauer) Maychark.


Betty grew up in Bayonne and Leonia, NJ. She graduated in 1944 from Leonia High School. After high school, Betty attended Bucknell University and Columbia University. She worked for Lederlee Labs in Pearl River as a technician for 4 years.


Betty married William August Oltmer Jr. on Thursday, April 1, 1948 in Demarest, NJ. They were happily married for 52 years and lived in New Milford, NJ. They purchased a summer home in Highland Lakes, NJ and were both active in the Country Club for over 30 years. She chaired many of the club dances and was involved with the Teen activities. Betty started the first swim team at Highland Lakes Country Club and coached the team for many years despite the fact that she could hardly swim. Under her guidance, the team rose to the top and won their first Championship. She was also a Cub Scout Den Mother and helped out with the Boy Scouts.


After her children were grown, Betty went back to work as the Activity Director at Inglemoor Center in Englewood, NJ. She enjoyed her work and made many friends. Betty was a member of the Association for Nursing Home Activities Directors in NJ and was active in the New Milford Senior Center. She moved to Belmont Greens In Ashburn, VA and lived there for 15 years. There she kept busy as a member of the Ashburn Classics, Red Hat Ladies and the Garden Club for Belmont Green Condo Association.

Betty enjoyed going out to dinner, meeting with friends, sewing and gardening.


She is survived by her children Cathleen (Mark) Gram, of Pflugerville, Carol Anne (Frank) Jacobi of Hubbardton, Celeste Liscouski of Lovettsville and William (Laural) Oltmer III of Harpursville; and a sister Estelle Maychark of Leonia, NJ. Betty has 6 grandchildren, Jennifer Schmitt, Nanette Conner, Amanda Liscouski, Claire Monroe, Alexis Oltmer and Rachel Oltmer; and 5 great-grandchildren, Jillian, Brooke, Sarah, Catie and Luke. She was preceded in death by her loving husband Bill and her parents Valentine and Josephine.


Visitation was offered on May 13, 2018 from 2-4 PM at the Volk Funeral Home, 268 Kinderkamack Road, Oradell, NJ 07649. The family greeted friends and relatives on May 14, 2018 at 9:30 AM in the chapel with a funeral service officiated at 10 AM followed by interment at Brookside Cemetery, 425 Engle Street, Englewood, NJ 07631.


In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Alzheimers Foundation of America at alzfdn.org
