DR. VELMA CHANDLER DIES, Helped Develop Penicillin

Bridgewater - One of the first scientist in the country to work on penicillin, Dr. Velma Chandler, of 105 Branch Rd., died yesterday (June 18, 1962) in St. Peter's General Hospital in New Brunswick, where she had been a patient about 10 days.
Dr. Chandler, manager of the department of microbiology in the research department of microbiology in the research department of Ethicol Inc, for the last 11 years, was appointed in 1943 a member of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration team overseeing the manufacture of penicillin.

Only a few weeks ago for reason of health, Dr. Chandler resigned from Ethicon and was planning to relocated in California, where most of her family is living. Two weeks ago she was honored at a farewell testimonial dinner by the member of the Zonta Club of Somerset County, and two days later she entered, St Peter's General Hospital.

Dr. Chandler, also was a member of the Bridgewater Board of Health, from which she recently resigned and was active in the Family Counseling Service of Somerset County and the Somerville branch of American Association of University Women.
She took her undergraduate degree, from Washington State University in 1933 and her master's and doctor's degrees at Georgetown University in 1947 and 1948.
A native of Kansas, she lived her younger life in San Diego, California.
She is survived by two brothers, Carl of Santa Barbara, California and John of San Diego and two sisters, Mrs. Marian Lu Hessel of Los Angeles and Mrs. Virginia Brown of Indio California.

Funeral services will be conducted tomorrow at 10 am in the Quackenboss Funeral Home in New Brunswick by the Rev. Robert Snable of the New Brunswick Presbyterian Church.
Interment will be private.
Friends may call at the funeral home today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9pm.
