Delaware was working as a miller when enlisted as a Private in Battery "B", 38th Battalion, Virginia Heavy Artillery on 25 April 1861. He was described at enlistment as 5'9" tall, with blue eyes and a light complexion. He reenlisted on 9 February 1862.

He was killed in action near Fort Magruder, while acting as ventsman of his gun.
