Corporal John W. Belles, age 21, company I, 85th Il. Inf., farmer, born in Indiana and enlisted from Duncan's Mills, Illinois. He served until the close of the war, and was mustered out with the regiment. Is said to be living at Cedarvale, Chautauqua county, Kansas.
John was the son of Nicholas and Elizabeth Myers Belles. He married Phoebe Ashell on Sep 8, 1859, in Fulton, Illinois. To this Union were born 8 children. Fanny, Mary E, Nathaniel, Rosa E, Ferman, Delos Artimus, Earnest Leo, and infant death. Known as being one of the earliest settlers of the Irish Flats in Chautauqua County. He was known for raising good crops and a well respected farmer!
