Lewis was the son of Joseph Brittain Howell and Sarah Parker Garretson. He married first to Anna C. Bell on 7 June 1865 in Trenton, Mercer Co., NJ. After her death in 1876, he married second to Mrs. Jane "Jennie" A. Standiford Hill.

The relatives and friends, also Kinghts of Pythias Lodge No 61, are invited to attend the services from the residence of his son-in-law, Charles P Fields, No 10[?] Jackson Street, on Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment at Riverview Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
