M. Joan Butcher, 91, of Fairmount died Sunday, May 15, 2022, at Marion Health after a brief illness.

Joan was born on December 12, 1930, in Ocean City, New Jersey, daughter of the late James D. and Mary Elizabeth (Bevington) Roth.

She graduated from Fairmount High School in 1949.

Joan and Phillip G. Butcher were married on September 12, 1953. He preceded her in death on September 21, 2016.

Joan was the epitome of a homemaker. She welcomed anyone to her home and her table for a wonderful meal. Joan handmade each of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren quilts. Many of her exchange student grandchildren were also given quilted gifts as well. She loved attending her children and grandchildren's events and activities, traveling with Phil's siblings, and vegetable and flower gardening. Joan was the longest living member of the Fairmount United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir with her family. She was the first Commissioner of the Girls Softball League and a Past President of the Fairmount Park Board. After her children were in school, she babysat to help fund their college educations. Joan was a sports enthusiast for everything from IU to NASCAR

Joan is survived by four children, Gary (Karen) Butcher, Anoka, IN, John Butcher, Marion, Jack (Leslie) Butcher, Cincinnati, OH, and Joanie (Barry) Howard, Fairmount; seven grandchildren, Terry (Sherry) Butcher, Travis (Tasha) Butcher, Amanda (Wally) Gebhardt II, Katie (Matt) Burnheimer, Nick Butcher, Derek Howard, and Patrick (Sarah) Howard; 10 great-grandchildren; Justin, Jordan, Alivia, Zaleigh, Kadin, Khinley Butcher, Josie and Wally III Gebhardt, Henry and Claire Burnheimer; brothers, Robert "Bob Roth and Daniel "Jake" (Marilyn) Roth both of Fairmount; in-laws, Jim & Marietta Butcher and Carolyn Combs; 36 exchange grandsons; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and brothers Jack and James Roth.

Services for Joan will be held at Armes-Hunt Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 415 South Main Street, Fairmount, Indiana. Visitation will be Friday, May 20, 2022, from 5-7 PM. Funeral service will be Saturday, May 21 at 1 PM with Pastor Dawn Cuthbert officiating.

Burial will be at Park Cemetery.
