Joanne Capodanno
" Joanne Marie Capodanno (MacLennan) died quietly, with her family, May 14, 2022 after battling pancreatic cancer for a year and a half.
Joanne was born on March 19,1942 to Helen (née Manlove) and Stuart MacLennan in Wilmington, Delaware. She attended St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception elementary school, and earned a full academic scholarship to Padua Academy, from which she graduated in 1960. She was a member of the National Honor Society, graduated with High Honors, and volunteered at the St. Anthony's Festa Patronale spaghetti dinners, where she met her future husband, Joseph Capodanno. Upon graduating, Joanne entered the convent at Our Lady of Angels, joining the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia. She earned her B.A. in English in 1971.
Joanne began her life-long passion for teaching at St. Peter Clavers in Baltimore, MD where she taught English and soon became the school Principal. She often recalled the work was rewarding but the days were long as they ran a soup kitchen in the city during height of the Civil Rights movement and the riots following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Joanne returned to Wilmington and took a position as the Principal of St. Anthony of Padua. She eventually left the convent and a year later while running errands around town, she bumped into Joe Capodanno. They were married July 11,1976 and settled down in Trolley Square. Joanne continued working in education as the Principal of Our Lady of Fatima, the technology teacher at Elementary Workshop Montessori School, and finally the Principal of St. John the Beloved, where the school flourished under her stewardship. While working and raising two teenagers, she earned her M.A. in Education from Wilmington University in 1999. She retired from the Diocese of Wilmington in 2008 and enjoyed a well deserved retirement filled with friends, family, and travel.
Joanne will be remembered for the quiet, graceful, unassuming way in which she forged a path in this world. She was a lover of the underdog and ardent supporter of those who needed a helping hand. She was an unparalleled wife, mother, grandmother, and friend who was beloved by all who knew her. She generously gave of herself and was always ready for a good time. Joanne enjoyed spending her free time on the daily crossword puzzle, gathering with friends for lunch, or playing Rummikub, visiting the beach, and most of all, spending quality time with her grandchildren, who adored her. She was happiest gathered around the dining room table with her family celebrating a birthday or a holiday, playing games, and laughing at one of the many stories she had from growing up in a big family of six girls. Her infectious laugh, wit, delicious baking, and uncanny knack for remembering everyone's favorites will be missed by those who love her.
Joanne was preceded in death by her mother, Helen Fiore (Manlove); father, Stuart MacLennan; sisters Susan Pierce, Madolin Rohrbaugh, and Judith MacLennan; and nephew Michael Stebner. She is survived by her husband of 45 years Joseph Capodanno, Jr.; sisters, Helene Winward and Carol Hall; daughter, Lucia (James) Spillan; son, Joseph Capodanno, III; daughter Julie (Brian) Smith; and grandchildren Dalton, Darby and Bailee Spillan, and Emerson and Kellan Smith; also many loving nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Dr. Dhaval Shah and his team at MOHC, Dr. Charles Yeo and his team at Thomas Jefferson Hospital, and Delaware Hospice for taking such good care of her.
Family and friends are invited to attend an evening viewing from 6pm-8pm on Thursday, May 19, 2022 at CHARLES P. ARCARO FUNERAL HOME, 2309 Lancaster Ave., Wilmington DE, 19805.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated, 11am on May 20, 2022 at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 9th and DuPont Sts. in Wilmington. Burial to follow in All Saints Cemetery."
