Farewell to a member of the Greatest Generation. Mrs. Marie K. Miller passed away peacefully on Aug. 1 at the Rocky Mountain Care Center. She was attended by her son and caregiver, Philip A. Miller and hospice CNA Cherylynn Miller, no relation, but absolutely essential to the family during this transition. Marie was born May 18, 1921 in San Juan, Calif., to John Knutti and Terry Weston Knutti. Obit Marie Miller (1)She grew up and attended public schools in nearby Hollister. After attending junior college and in the aftermath of the attack on Pearl Harbor, she entered the U.S. Civil Service at Benecia Arsenal on July 9, 1942. Working for the U.S. Army, she contributed valuable services during World War II and the Cold War, including the Berlin Airlift, the Cuban Missile Crisis and the hot conflicts in Korea and South Vietnam. Marie retired on Nov. 29,1990 after four months of Operation Desert Shield and the ramp up to Desert Storm. Her systems analysis skill set also helped maintain America's preparedness during peace time. Marie married Army Maj. Philip Arthur Miller on Aug. 16, 1954. After mustering out, Mr. Miller managed the Benecia Arsenal Federal Credit Union. On Dec. 15, 1955, their son Philip Alan was born. Upon the closing of the Arsenal in 1962, the family relocated to Tooele where Mrs. Miller worked at the Ordinance Depot with Mr. Jack Welsh and Mrs. Dale Killian. Mr. Miller moved accounts and assets and founded the Tooele Federal Credit Union. After building a dynamic financial institution, he died suddenly in 1968. Marie continued working at the Tooele Army Depot, taking in stride the challenges of a single working mother, raising her son and providing for his education. Before and after retirement, Marie and Philip Alan enjoyed traveling to visit family in Washington State and California. Her interests included painting, home computing, Llardre figurines, bridge games with friends, service work with her Beta sorority and corresponding with her grand-niece Trisha Johnson. She was an avid animal lover. With her son, she trapped, spayed and neutered seven feral and three stray cats, including her favorite, the irrepressible Creamsicle. In October 2008, after a series of health setbacks, Marie re-injured her left hip and Philip assumed the role of full time caregiver. On Pioneer Day 2013, she was hospitalized and placed in hospice care. She died eight days later. Marie was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister Eileen Cullum, brother Weston Frank, nieces Cindy Johnson and Donna Lopez, and nephew Butch Cullum. She is survived by her son, nephews Albert Frank and Donald Cullum, eight grand-nieces, and two grand-nephews. The family would like to thank her hair stylist, Cheri Caldwell, her physician since 2004, Dr. Sergio Abarca and his staff, Rocky Mountain Care for their kindness and diligence, Harmony Home Health and Hospice, especially Cherylynn, and RN Barbara Herrera, as well as Chaplin Ned Bevan and social worker Stacey Green, and Tate Mortuary. We would also like to thank our pharmacist, Mr. Sheldon Birch, for above and beyond after hours service on July 27. There will be a brief graveside service prior to the internment at the Tooele City Cemetery, 10 a.m. on Friday Aug. 19. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the American Cancer Society, Red Cross Disaster Relief or the Defenders of Wildlife.
