Son of Earl and Ada Marie Batesole. On August 18, 1927 he married Helen M Finlely in Marshalltown, Marshall County, Iowa. He was in the grocery business with his father and two brothers, Clarence and Harold. Their first store, the Star Grocery, was located in East State Street in Marshalltown, and they later went on to Sount Center and West Main Street.
Lyle played football for Marshalltown High School in 1922. He played right guard. "This man was our largest asset in football weighing 210 pounds. He always handled it to a good advantage and all those who have played with him all those who have played against him know that he has 210 pounds of fight also.
